Call for Applications

2017 GLOBAL UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGESCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Public Affairs Section (PAS)seeks candidates for the 2017 GlobalUndergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD).  First, second, or third-year undergraduatestudents who demonstrate leadership through academic excellence, communityinvolvement, and extracurricular activities, and who have a good command ofEnglish, are invited to apply for the program.The application deadline is5:00 PM, Sunday, January 1, 2017.

Program Description

Funded by theU.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, for theacademic year 2017-2018, Global UGRAD will provide one-semester scholarships toapproximately 250 outstanding undergraduate students from underrepresentedsectors of East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, the Near East andNorth Africa, South and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the WesternHemisphere for non-degree, full-time study in the United States. Students willstudy at accredited four-year U.S. institutions of higher education, receiveintensive English language instruction if needed, and engage in communityservice, professional development workshops, and cultural enrichmentactivities.

Global UGRADparticipants will be enrolled full time in undergraduate course work at thehost institution to allow ample opportunity for substantive interaction withU.S. faculty and student peers, and for exposure to U.S. academic and classroomculture.  Host institutions will offerinstruction on topics including academic research and writing, criticalthinking, time management, note-taking, and studying for and taking tests.Participants will live on-campus with U.S. peers or in homestays with Americanfamilies.

Students will be required toparticipate in a minimum of twenty hours of community service activities duringthe program.  Students will also berequired to enroll in at least one course in a U.S. Studies field, such as U.S.history, literature, art, or government.

Failure to meet the academicrequirements of the university and Global UGRAD program (poor grades, failureto submit assignments or attend class) may result in dismissal from GlobalUGRAD.  Participants must remain in goodacademic standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

 

Candidate Qualifications

 

Competition will be based on thepotential of the candidates to become student leaders through academicperformance, community involvement, and extracurricular activities, withoutregard to their field of study, race, religion, or gender.  Competition is open to all applicants who:

vAre currently enrolled in an undergraduatedegree program in Vietnam;

vWill have completed their first year ofundergraduate study by August 2017;

vHave at least one remaining semester to completeat their universities in Vietnam upon completion of the program in the UnitedStates;

vAchieved at least a 7.5 GPA in the previoussemester;

vDemonstrate a command of written and spokenEnglish;

vDemonstrate strong leadership qualities throughacademic performance, community involvement, and extracurricular activities;

vPreference will be given to those who have hadlittle or NO experience in the U.S.; and

vCommitted to return directly to Vietnam afterthe completion of the program.
